Imperfect Competition with Costly Disposal

چکیده

This paper studies the effect of disposal costs on consumer surplus and firms’ profits. First, we analyze a monopolist producing inventories either early at low cost with little information about demand, or later more yet higher cost. Unsold products are discarded. The firm forgoes an production advantage if only demand uncertainty both simultaneously high. Expected decreases in its cost, lowers to mitigate costs, resulting lower expected profit surplus. Similar results hold for firms competing sales volumes unobserved inventories. Ex-ante symmetric may choose different timings. substitutes thereby affecting firm’s advantage. Accordingly, increase Firms adjust their timing, discontinuous change

Signaling with Imperfect Competition*

We analyze a duopoly model where …rms sell conspicuous goods to horizontallyand vertically-di¤erentiated consumers. These consumers care about both the intrinsic quality of the goods they purchase as well as the “social status”conveyed by these goods (namely, the social inference of their hidden wealth based on their purchase). Firms o¤er non-linear price and quality schedules that, in e¤ect, s...

Perfect Taxation with Imperfect Competition

This paper analyzes features of perfect taxation – also known as optimal taxation – when one or more private markets is imperfectly competitive. Governments with perfect information and access to lump-sum taxes can provide corrective subsidies that render outcomes efficient in the presence of imperfect competition. Relaxing either of these two conditions removes the government’s ability to supp...

Imperfect public monitoring with costly punishment - An experimental study∗

This paper experimentally investigates the effects of a costly punishment option on cooperation and social welfare in long, finitely repeated public good contribution games. In a perfect monitoring environment, increasing the severity of the potential punishment monotonically increases both contributions and the average net payoffs of subjects. In a more realistic imperfect monitoring environme...

Imperfect Competition and Sunspots

This paper shows that imperfect competition can be a rich source of sunspots equilibria and coordination failures. This is demonstrated in a dynamic general equilibrium model that has no major distortions except imperfect competition. In the absence of fundamental shocks, the model has a unique certainty (fundamental) equilibrium. But there is also a continuum of stochastic (sunspots) equilibri...

Efficiency and imperfect competition with incomplete markets

We deal with the problem of providing incentives for the implementation of constrained optimal outcomes in a two-period economy with incomplete markets. Allowing both for price observation, price-manipulation and a minimal amount of coordination enables to recover (second-best) efficiency at equilibrium, therefore to do better than perfect competition. To make this point, we construct a feasibl...
